Soulmate semantics

JTB started this thread in a text message, and JML is continuing it here. What constitutes a soulmate?

I say I can be "cosmically connected" to someone, but that doesn't make him or her my soulmate. JTB says that's just semantics. Maybe I need a better definition for the term "soulmate."

What do you think?

  1. Didn't Carrie Bradshaw settle this in a SATC episode years ago? My opinion is that both are sentimental overused crap. I prefer to think of people in my life as part of a family of choice. There is a whole school of thought that says we choose the people we are connected to on both a conscious and unconscious level. The ones that stick are the ones we need to work out whatever it its we chose them for in the first place. And like the family I'm born into I may not always like you but I am always connected to you.

  2. That is what I mean by "soulmate"-the people in your life. There is nothing romantic about it. Sometimes the "gong" on an interaction can resonate of years- it can be a brief as sitting next someone on a plane or it can be your lifelong friend that has made you crazy for as long as you can remember. I think the challenging ones are the most interesting soul mates. They really have something to teach me about myself. Why does that person drive me so crazy? What do I need to learn? What am I clinging to so desperately?
